262 Chapel Street
2025
This large-scale soft pastel drawing uses abstraction to expose the dehumanising power of the male gaze present in American Apparel's 2010s ads. The figures, once real retail workers, are warped into fluidly abstract forms, reflecting how they were reduced to mere objects of desire. The installation is completed by a pile of American Apparel clothes, symbolising how consumers bought into these male-driven fantasies, and the lonely hum of "Beautiful People," capturing the isolation of those who feel they can't live up to that unattainable image.
